How an Indian MSME should actually spend a ₹5 lakh tech budget
A blunt allocation guide for founders sitting on ₹5L of tech budget. What to spend on, what to skip, what to defer — based on 5 years of operator-side priorities.
Most MSME founders we talk to have ₹3-7 lakh sitting in a "tech / digital" budget line and no clear idea where to spend it. Here's how I'd allocate ₹5 lakh today, in priority order. This is the order. Don't skip ahead.
1. Conversion-optimized website — ₹1,20,000-1,80,000
Without a real funnel, every other rupee you spend on traffic is wasted. A 5-8 page site with multi-step lead capture, trust signals, real case studies, mobile-first. Ship in 14 days, then forget about it for a year. ROI: usually pays back in 60-90 days.
2. WhatsApp automation suite — ₹50,000-90,000
Indian customers prefer WhatsApp 8x over email. A 24/7 qualifying bot + calendar booking + payment links handles 70-80% of inbound conversation while you sleep. Single biggest leverage move available to an Indian SMB right now. ROI: pays back in weeks, not months.
3. CRM + lead-routing automation — ₹40,000-80,000
Stop tracking leads in spreadsheets. A CRM that auto-routes leads to the right person, sends instant follow-ups, tracks who's hot and who went cold. Frees up 8-15 hours/week of admin work. Use a SaaS (HubSpot Free, Zoho) and pay us only to wire it into your funnel.
4. Performance ad spend — ₹80,000-1,20,000
Only after the funnel is built. Spending on ads before fixing the funnel is lighting money on fire. Run a 90-day test on Google Search + Meta Ads. Measure cost-per-qualified-lead, not impressions.
5. Content + SEO — ₹50,000 / quarter ongoing
3-4 long-form pillar articles per quarter (1500+ words, target real keywords). Pays back over 12+ months as Google ranks them and they capture organic leads forever. Compounds — every quarter's articles keep working.
6. Analytics + measurement — ~₹0 (just time)
GA4, Microsoft Clarity, Search Console — all free. The cost is the discipline of looking at the data weekly. If you're not measuring, you're guessing.
What to NOT spend on (yet)
- Custom mobile app — only if you have proven web traction first.
- "AI" anything — most "AI for business" tooling is selling you a chatbot you don't need.
- Custom CRM build — use Zoho/HubSpot until you outgrow them.
- Big design refresh — fix conversion first, rebrand later.
- Influencer partnerships — measurable ROI is rare.
- Annual SaaS retainers locked at signup — start monthly, renew when proven.
Total: ₹4.4 lakh of the ₹5L spent on assets that compound. ₹60K reserved.
Reserve a ₹50-60K buffer for the inevitable unplanned thing — domain renewal, SSL, an emergency fix, a market test. Don't spend the full budget on day one.
