Custom trading dashboard vs. broker tools — when to build your own

Zerodha Console, Streak, Sensibull — they're great until they're not. Here's when an active trader actually benefits from building a private dashboard.

If you're a casual trader, broker tools are fine. If you're running multiple strategies across two or more brokers, deploying capital based on conviction, and trying to learn from your own data — broker tools start lying to you. Here's when to build your own.

What broker tools are good at

Order placement, basic position view, monthly P&L summary, tax reports. They're built for the median user — which is fine for the median user.

What they're bad at

• Strategy-level P&L (Console shows by symbol, not by setup).
• Multi-broker consolidation (each broker shows only their slice).
• Real backtesting with your own custom rules.
• Position sizing based on your risk model, not a generic SL.
• Drawdown tracking that actually accounts for compounded losses.

When custom is worth it

You trade more than 5-10 times per week, you run more than 2 strategies, you use more than one broker, or you're trying to actually learn from your data instead of just record-keeping. The threshold isn't "are you profitable" — it's "are you trying to systematize your edge".

Build cost reality check

A solid custom trading dashboard costs ₹2-5 lakh end-to-end. That's 4-6 months of broker subscription costs. If your edge is real and the missing data is hurting decisions, the math is obvious. If you're still looking for an edge, no dashboard fixes that.
