We audit 8-10 SMB websites a month before deciding to take on a project. Same six mistakes show up almost every time. None of them require a redesign — they require fixing the leaks. Here's the list, in order of what costs you the most pipeline.
Mistake 1 — One CTA on the home page
Most homes have a single "Contact Us" button buried in the nav. Visitors who almost convert have no second-best option. Fix: add a soft CTA (audit / calculator / WhatsApp), a primary CTA (book a call), and a fallback CTA (download something / read a case study). Three doors, not one.
Mistake 2 — Forms with 7+ fields
Each extra field drops conversion ~5-10%. We've seen real-estate sites ask for budget, location, project type, name, phone, email, message — and convert below 0.5%. Fix: 3-step form. Step 1: name + WhatsApp. Step 2: business type via pills. Step 3: optional details. Two-thirds of leads complete only step 1, which is fine — that's a pipeline ready to be qualified by a human.
Mistake 3 — No WhatsApp option
In India, customers reach out on WhatsApp 8x more than email. If your only contact path is a form that emails you, you're losing the impatient majority. Fix: visible click-to-WhatsApp button on every page, sticky on mobile. Pre-fill the message with context from the page they're on.
Mistake 4 — Slow follow-up
A lead contacted in under 5 minutes is 21x more likely to convert than one contacted in 30 minutes (Harvard Business Review study, still holds). Most SMBs reply 4-12 hours later. Fix: automated WhatsApp acknowledgment within 30 seconds, real human reply within 2 hours, calendar booking link auto-sent.
Mistake 5 — No tracking
You can't fix what you don't measure. Yet half the SMB sites we audit have either no Google Analytics or analytics that track only page views — no form submits, no WhatsApp clicks, no scroll depth. Fix: GA4 with conversion events for every CTA click, plus Microsoft Clarity for free heatmaps and session replays.
Mistake 6 — Trust signals scattered or absent
Visitors decide to convert in the first 8 seconds based on how trustworthy you look. If your testimonials are on a separate page, your case studies hidden under "Portfolio", and your MSME / GST badge in the footer only — none of it is doing its job. Fix: trust strip above the fold (badges, client logos), a real testimonial near every primary CTA, case-study metric numbers visible on the home page.
How much you're leaking
Conservative math: a service business getting 2,000 visitors/month at 0.8% conversion is doing 16 leads. Fix the six mistakes above and the same traffic typically does 35-50 leads. At even ₹15,000 per closed deal at 20% close rate, that's ₹4-9 lakh of monthly revenue you're leaving on the table — every month.
